Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Party

Since the launch of Campaign 4, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of characters, and a thrilling plot featuring celestial beings, fiends, and sinister influences increasing in strength within the urban setting.

Note: Key plot points for the latest installment of this adventure follow below.

The Warrior Group Introduced

Episode 3 concluded with a dramatic pause and presented the premier party of heroes who will branch out from the central cast to begin their independent quest, separate from the remaining groups.

The combat-focused team includes the determined fighter (brought to life by the voice actor), Thimble (the talented performer), Tyranny (Whitney), the cleric (the player), and Kattigan (the actor).

The Reason for Division

Considering a large ensemble, it was obvious from the beginning that keeping everyone at a single group would be unfeasible.

Hence, the first four episodes of this story serve as an Overture, weaving together the characters’ stories before branching into three separate parties: Fighters, Strategists, and Questers.

What Defines the Soldiers Table

According to the DM, the warrior group is for participants who prefer a traditionally charged combat and conflict-driven gameplay experience where non-violent answers are few and far between.

Upon first impression, figures such as the squeamish cleric the cleric might appear mismatched, but the events of episode 3 demonstrate why these specific adventurers are perfectly fit for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

For one thing, the group knows exactly where to go next after a violent initial meeting with the enemy group.

Casimir of the deceased character—whose passing kicked off the story’s plot—manipulated the enemy for his personal gain, entering Thjazi’s hideout, striking Thimble, and taking all the magical artifacts to dispose of.

The traitor then paid off his debts and fled to a fortified location in Gormalay, Timmony, beyond the city, with Cyd close behind.

Character Drivers

Secondly, each adventurer has a personal reason to exit Dol-Makjar:

  • The rogue, as the close ally and closest confidant, seeks vengeance.
  • The adventurer has experience in the northern area and warns that it is a nasty location.
  • Tyranny and Wicander, having resisted his family’s wishes to eliminate Teor and instead saved him, have nowhere else to go.
  • But, their status as key figures in House Halovar could help the group enter locations they usually can’t.
  • Furthermore, The fighter vowed a life debt to Wicander for his salvation and will now go with him wherever.

Wanted and Hunted

Lastly, all of them are sought by the authorities that rule the setting for a variety of reasons, making remaining behind too risky:

  • Thimble and The hero are notorious outlaws.
  • The warrior and The cleric defied House Halovar and the army of fiends they are allied with.
  • The target is wanted dead by House Halovar.

This leaves them no alternative but to head to the remote area in pursuit of the traitor.

What’s Next?

Based on the recent installment’s post-show segment, we find out that the Soldiers table won’t be around next week, leaving the rest of the cast members to assemble the Seekers and Strategists tables.

Viewers can expect finding out which players will be assigned to which table in Campaign 4’s last Overture episode, available to watch on the upcoming Thursday.
