From Praise to Fury: Conservative Response to Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.

Conservative reactions to the partial release of documents involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while others expressed frustration over how heavy redactions cast former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.

Administration Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole

Justice Department officials defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the censorship procedure.

Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections

While the former president's identity and likeness are visible in portions of the materials, the widespread black blocks prompt significant questions about what may be hidden beneath them. Some Republicans immediately called for greater transparency.

“The public are raging and disengaging,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the statute, and implied that a future Congress may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this document release egregiously does not adhere to both the intent and the letter of the act,” he added.

Some Rightwing Figures Rally Behind the Disclosure

But, a segment of conservative commentators and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the administration.

The release—from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are entirely censored, and numerous of the individuals shown in pictures have their identities obscured.

Yet some do not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed some rightwing figures to launch the offensive.

“This is quite ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.

“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”

Clinton Spokesperson Releases Response

Bill Clinton has consistently said he knew of no criminal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been concealing those files for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.

“The release is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photos as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.

Broader Rightwing Comment Remains Muted

Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was relatively subdued after the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for action that preceded the legislative vote to pass a law requiring the files' release.

Loomer, who not long ago accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest proponents for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing personalities were given physical folders of materials that contained little previously unseen information.
