As Tuesday dawned citizens of the world's most polluted city found themselves exposed to dangerously toxic air that registered in the "severe" category.

Extremely High Pollution Readings

Multiple areas of the capital registered an AQI exceeding 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the safe threshold set by the WHO.

In some locations, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of 1800, representing 15-20x higher than acceptable levels.

Firecracker Restrictions and Current Policy Shifts

Beginning in 2020, authorities had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the sale and use of firecrackers during celebrations due to their major role to the dangerous smog that blankets the metropolis as colder weather sets in.

However recently, the newly elected city government appealed to the supreme court to seek a relaxation of the restrictions.

They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – previously criticized by environmental experts as being only about 30% lower impact – as a balance between "heritage and ecological concerns".

Court Verdict and Enforcement

Much to the frustration of medical and ecological campaigners, judges approved the appeal, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during specific hours throughout the celebrations.

Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable violation of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly variety.

Several recording stations throughout the city recorded contamination spiking around the night hours to extremely hazardous levels observed during celebrations in at least recent memory.

Cross-Border Consequences

Extensive ignition of pyrotechnics during the festival also initiated a blame game with adjacent Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab province partly blaming deteriorating pollution levels in the city of Lahore on pollutants coming from India following the celebrations.

Long-Standing Environmental Crisis

Alarmingly severe concentrations of atmospheric toxins in the city have persisted as a serious challenge for more than 15 years, with the condition continuing to worsen.

Around celebratory seasons, the amount of hazardous airborne contaminants in the air has been found to shoot up to 70% higher the peak records ever measured in the Chinese city, which was once regarded as the planet's dirtiest city.

Diverse Pollution Sources

This crisis in the capital is attributed to a convergence of different contributors including automobile exhaust, dust, building projects, waste incineration and pollutants from crop residue ignition in nearby states of farming communities.

Throughout these areas, agricultural workers regularly ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, generating toxic pollution that then gets trapped over the capital as colder air descends.

Health and Financial Impact

The economic and health consequences on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants calling home the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to various studies.

The contaminated air leads to increased incidence of nervous system, cardiovascular and lung disorders, and can result in malignancies.

Environmental contamination is projected to be accounting for ten thousand premature fatalities per year in the capital.
