Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Major Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor
In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Discussions Taking Place
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
