The Game's Evasion Move Warrants Praise

For those who have experienced the popular action RPG, or just about any action-adventure title, you're probably acquainted with the wonderful feature known as the “dodge roll.” This avoidance maneuver enables your hero to perform a forward, sideways, or backward tumble to avoid all incoming damage and gain space from foes. Sounds handy, doesn't it?

The evasion roll, however, has gotten plenty of criticism, and not just due to the tumbling; it's been called dumb, a cheap tactic, and an implausible action — and in some cases, I concur. You should see me somersaulting past nearby enemy groups in a well-known fantasy game — they can't hit me! But the title's rolling dodge stands as the roll to surpass every other rolling dodges, and let me explain.

In Elden Ring's case, the designers identified a clever approach to counter all sentiments claiming the maneuver is not challenging enough: merely bestow all foes unreasonable strength, increase it further, and each player character who ventures close them will feel immensely thankful for their dodge-roll ability, myself included. Given the intense difficulty, evading successfully seems like an accomplishment, not a cheat.

No other evasion method in this RPG matches this level of gratification and reliability, since rapid sprints offer limited distance and blocking attempts are readily overcome by strong enemies. Someone once recommended hopping as the main Elden Ring evasion method, but aside from not providing optimal placement, I couldn't understand how taking a crushing hit would improve my chances of defeating bosses (inexperience, possibly).

Perfecting the Skill

But even though the rolling dodge provides relief in an incredibly challenging experience, it demands ability. To begin with, the game's evasion move merely initiates a window of invulnerability once you release the roll control, which stops a rapid, fearful withdrawal from dire situations. Moreover, even though it can carry you off from opponents, it's far more effective to utilize it as a moment to move nearer, optimally at their back, and land some hits. In conclusion, you still need grasp and foresee opponent moves, since evading too early of a long charging animation could conclude your immunity ahead of the attack striking… which will seriously hurt.

A Well-Designed Feature

While dodge-rolling in rapid sequence might seem rather absurd (give it up for Geralt again), this isn't practically possible in Elden Ring. Certainly, that doesn't render it a realistic fighting maneuver — the very cause why it would be pure horror to experience it in a product like a realism-focused RPG — yet we're discussing a spectacular magical game we're talking about, therefore, it doesn't matter?

Similar to any respectable rolling dodge, the game's evasion sequence is spruced up with a brief tumbling leap at the start, providing a dynamic sensation rather than plopping the player downward. Based on your equipment, the technique may seem super agile or moderately cumbersome, but it remains quicker and smoother than the rolling dodges featured in the previous titles. Admittedly, you may embed your large weapon on the floor when wielding such equipment, but that's your responsibility for avoiding ranged weapons (I'm joking — steer clear of Elden Ring using ranged options).

Optimal Harmony

This title's evasion system creates the perfect balance between challenge and opportunity, offering hope of victory while endangering that very prospect at the tiniest misstep. Master this technique, and you'll be rewarded with not just victory, but fulfillment.
